Calling all Yankee Fans!
Join New Jersey author, Paul Semendinger, Ed.D. as he discusses his award winning book, The Least Among Them: 29 Players, Their Brief Moments in the Big Leagues, and a Unique History of the New York Yankees.
The Least Among Them is a most special baseball book that looks at the New York Yankees history in an original, unique, and never before written manner. Throughout their history, the Yankees have been defined by the legends of their most famous players. But, as part of their long history, the Yankees have also fielded players that have become lost to history. This book is those players’ story, telling the unique histories of the men whose entire major league baseball career lasted but a single game with that game being played as a New York Yankee. While these players may be forgotten, their stories are compelling. Filled with a unique Yankee history, The Least Among Them tells the story of baseball’s most successful franchise in an entirely new way.

Wednesday, October. 11th, 7pm
Registration Required: Register Online
The British architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick was chosen to contribute a major public artwork for the center of Hudson Yard in Manhattan – a structure that is monumental like architecture, but also elegantly shaped like a sculpture. Intended to attract visitors to the new commercial center, it became controversial for many reasons. Heatherwick’s newest addition to NYC’s landmarks is his Little Island, a circular pier, beautifully landscaped, with outside performance spaces and interactive public art. We will have a close look at the amazing career of this British designer who brings a whole new approach to the shaping of spaces and places, with a special focus on his NYC designs.

The Automat – Movie Screening
Wednesday, October 18th, 1pm
Registration Required: Register Online
Once upon a nickel, before fast food, one American restaurant empire was unstoppable. Experience the untold story of “The Automat,” a documentary film directed by Lisa Hurwitz and starring Mel Brooks.
“The Automat” recounts the lost history of the iconic restaurant chain Horn & Hardart, which served affordable-priced quality food to millions of New Yorkers and Philadelphians for more than a century. Founded by Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart in 1888, it revolutionized the nation’s restaurant scene with comfortable interiors, quality food, and state of the art technology for the early 20th century. The chain welcomed those who had been ignored, including immigrants, the working-class, Blacks, and women, all of whom were often not welcome in restaurants. Horn & Hardart’s technology captured the public’s imagination like nothing else in 1900’s— the customer put nickels into slots and little windows opened to reveal the customer’s pick, be it a slice of pie, macaroni and cheese, or a Salisbury steak. The gleaming glass and stainless-steel windows looked “sanitary” and like nothing else in existence. “The Automat” illustrates how the company both served the public with great food and at the same time treated its employees with fairness and integrity.

When There Were Witches: An Exploration of the Salem Witch Trials
Virtual
Monday October 23rd
7pm
Registration Required: Register Online
In January of 1692, a strange illness seized control of five young girls living in Salem Village, a contentious and divided town in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. When medical professionals couldn’t identify the illness, the town believed the girls had come “under an evil hand.” Events soon spiraled out of control with local divisions and a splintered colonial government feeding the frenzy. Archivist Mickey DiCamillo unravels the events with archival documents from the period, and program participants will interact with transcripts from the 1692 interrogations of suspected witches. A Q&A session follows the 60-minute presentation.

Mel Brooks is one of several prominent Americans paying homage in the film to the memory of a restaurant chain that once dotted the corners of two great cities. The late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Secretary of State Colin Powell, actors Carl Reiner and Elliott Gould, the Horn family and the Hardart family, and dedicated former employees share memories of life at the Automat. Starbucks Coffee founder Howard Schultz talks about how he was inspired to start his company because of Horn and Hardart.
